Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
