Over twenty Olympic medal winners, coaches and other international athletes have put their names to a letter calling for a end to the death penalty of a champion boxer and instructor, who is sentenced to die in the nation.

Increasing International Outrage

During growing worldwide anger over the country's escalating use of the death penalty as a means of suppression, the forcefully phrased appeal denounces the authorities's verdict to confirm the execution order of the boxing champion.

The boxer, thirty, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was arrested for being involved in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has spent five years in detention, where he has been mistreated and held in isolation.

“Competition is intended to inspire optimism, unity, and courage,” the endorsers wrote. “The execution of a champion for his political views is a blatant attack on these ideals and a warning to all sportspeople who attempts to voice opinions.

Pattern of Killing Sports Figures

The statement noted that the athlete's case was not an isolated one and highlighted the country's record of sentencing to death competitors for their beliefs, such as a football captain, leader of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the female volleyball side. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year Iranian wrestling champion, faced the death penalty.

Other supporters to the appeal include Tracy Edwards, who captained the first all-female crew in a international sailing event and was the pioneering lady to receive a prestigious nautical honor; the former captain of the national squad Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the Iranian squad for the 1978 World Cup.

Detention and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was arrested in early 2020. The accusations against him included “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”. His sentence has been annulled on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the third occasion. His court case was denounced as “highly unjust” by advocates and groups.

Appeal to United Nations

The urging to halt Vafaei Sani’s execution is subsequent to a previous letter to the global human rights chief for freedoms, signed by over one hundred human rights experts and groups, demanding intervention to stop the competitor's capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge

As per findings, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has achieved alarming dimensions”. In the year 2023, officials executed at least over 850 people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. Last year, records showed 972 executions, marking the maximum count since two thousand fifteen.
