The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
